5. அண்ணாவின் பெயரில் கட்சி நடத்திக்கொண்டு மத உணர்வை

3. Every Minute Zen

Zen students are with their masters at least ten years before they presume to teach others. Nan-in was visited by Tenno, who, having passed his apprenticeship had become a teacher.

The day happened to be rainy, so Tenno wore wooden clogs and carried an umbrella. After greeting him Nan-in remarked: “I suppose you left your wooden clogs in the vestibule. I want to know if your umbrella is on the right or left side of the clogs.”
Tenno, confused, had no instant answer.

He realized he was unable to carry his Zen every minute.

He became Nan-in’s pupil, and studied six more years to accomplish his every-minute Zen.

4. A Cup of Tea

Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.

Nan-in served Tea. He poured his visitor’s cup full, and then kept on pouring.

The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. “It is overfull. No more will go in!” .

“Like this cup,” Nan-in said, “you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”

1. How Grass and Trees Become Enlightened

Shinkan came back to Japan from China after his contemplation of Zen over thirteen years.

One day a fifty-year-old student of enlightenment said to Shinkan, “I have studied the Tendai school of thought since I was a little boy, but one thing in it I cannot understand. Tendai claims that even the grass and trees will become enlightened. To me this seems very strange.”

“Of what use is it to discuss how grass and trees become enlightened?”, asked Shinkan, “The question is how you yourself can become so. Did you even consider that?”

“I never thought of it that way,” marveled the student

“Then go home and think it over”

2. Best Piece

When Banzan was walking through a market he overheard a conversation between a butcher and his customer. “Give me the best piece of meat you have,” said the customer.

“Everything in my shop is the best,” replied the butcher, “You cannot find here any piece of meat that is not the best.”

At these words Banzan became enlightened.

Movie – is it good or not good?

Just came out of INOX Theater after watching Bruce Willis’s Die Hard 4.

Mouth is murmuring ‘John McClane… McClane!’ and a question rises inside – “Die Hard 4, is it Good or bad?”

Some one may ask me tomorrow – “how was the movie? Good or not good?” Whether it was good or bad was only to me. There were hundreds of people watched the movie in the theater with me. Each and every one will have their own points and opinions, their own like and dislikes about the movie. What they liked in the movie and what I liked in the movie may differ. It may not match.

I watched Matrix-1 and attracted with Morpheus’s character and powerful voice and the friend who watched with me liked agent smith and trinity. Two of my friend watched ‘I-robot’; one did not like the movie and other become fond of the dialogue ‘My father has created me with a purpose’. Same movie, same theater and two different opinions! What scene or dialogue I liked and the other one liked will be different.

Their answer about ‘movie is good or not good’ will not suit me and the same is the case for my answer to them. How can I conclude about movie is good or not good?

I remember even after coming out of the theater ‘Gabbar Sing’ of Sholay was in me. ‘Neelambari’ character of ‘Padayappa’ was there with me for two days. ‘Sithan’ was making those animalistic movements even after watching ‘ Pitha mahan’. There was a lingering question ‘ Neenga Nallavaraaa kettavaraaa ? Theriayalayeppa !’ two days after watching Maniratnam’s ‘ Nayagan’.

‘ Ayyaaa…unga sambalam yevlo innu ?’ – dialogue, Pugazhendi, Aranganar and interview scenes of ‘ Mudalvan / Nayak’ are there still in the mind. The cricket team of ‘ Lagaan’ is still there in the mind. The same is the case with ‘ Chennai – 600028’. The ‘Anita’ character of ‘ 7G Rainbow colony’ is not going out from me. “ ilaaa ilaaa ilaaaa’ dialogue and the uncouth villain of ‘ Vettaiyadu vilaiyadu’ is still sitting in the mind. “ Taprish Aalam’ of “Apaharan’ was there with me at least for a week.

“ Ulley Po” is still making a sound inside from ‘ Badshaa’. There was a change in the way I drove in the road after seeing ‘Die hard 4’. There was an impact on me by the ‘McClane’ character. I got it. The character or story or some thing of the movie should linger in me at least for a day or two. If it is lingering in me, it is a good movie. It has to be in me for a day or two. What I like in the movie and what you like in the movie will be different. But if the movie is lingering in me for a day or two after I stepped out of theater, it is good movie.

‘John McClane… I am coming …’.

Happy Independence Day …!

Whenever I visit any country, after experiencing and admiring the best things, I would loudly say, “This is Jujubi. My India will become better than this!”

Landed at Hong Kong, seeing those old men at work admired, “How come these people work so intensely even at their age of 70s”.

Landed at Singapore admired, “How come these people maintain the entire country so clean”.
Living in United states of America wondered by seeing the infrastructure, “What an infrastructure even for a small remote village!”.
Living at Japan I was astonished by seeing those people’s discipline at work and ultimate courtesy in public.
For all these things, I would reply, “All these countries have developed themselves in the top layer. But what about the root level? It is bad. It can collapse any moment. But… My India… ahahahahah… Roots are v..e…r…y strong in India. Only we have to work on the top layer. We will do it. And India will be on top of the world.”

By telling such an answer I was cheating myself. Deep in the heart… there were desires and plenty of questions.

“ India… Mera Bharat Mata. What kind of country is this.. ? What a reverence and values this country has…! Sana Dhana Dharma which had answer for almost all the queries were practiced here. All these Asian countries like China, Japan, Srilanka and Philippines are behaving as if they are gurus of religious practices. This is the land which gave birth to Buddha, founder of their religions. Buddha was born and brought up in this country. Even Saint Thomas of Christianity wanted to close his eyes in this holy land and he did it. Mahatma Gandhi who gave ahimsa to the humanity was born and brought up in this country.

What a county! And what a reverence this country has …!
But today… Where is it heading to…?

Why are these people spoiling this country?

Why do not these politicians understand the reverence and value of this country?

Lakkubai Pathak Scandal, Fofers Scandal, Tehelka Scandal, Sex scandal …. Scandal. What kind of leaders we have here in this country?

Either we get leaders like scandal king Laloo Prasad yadav or sleeping prime minister.

Why are not getting leaders like Lee Kaun yew of Singapore or Fidel Castro of Cuba?

Policemen rap Padmini in the lockup. They suppose to guard her and provide security. Why are they doing this? What is the security for a common man in this country?

A minister…. Suppose to motivate and encourage an industrialist. Here a minister is threatening TATA who contributes maximum to this country. What is happening here?

Sadam Hussain was hung there. A political leader creates one rally here and disturbs the day to day life of entire Bangalore. Why are they doing this?

Everywhere … it is corruption and bribe. People are dishonest. Everyone is ready to cheat someone. Oh..God!. Where is this country heading to …? People do not respect people. Why do they lie? Why do they cheat?

Traffic… Oh god! How many violations? Traffic rules are made for whom? They are for us. If you cross yellow line and park, it will block the opposite side traffic and creates the jam. It is going to disturb every one of us. Why do not these people understand this?

Bangalore…! How was it in 2000? Garden city. How is it now? A desert on its way! Why are these people cutting so many trees? It is going to affect the environment. Why are they not bothering about planting trees?

Oh… My country… where are you heading to ..?” - This is how I used to worry.

My queries on .. “Politicians, Characterless Policemen, Traffic violation, Cutting the trees, Lottu and Losukku..” did not provide any solution either to this country or to myself. All these queries created worries in me and created a “RULES RAMANUJAM” out of me. It created a disturbance and stress inside. With a disturbance and stress inside, I could not excel in my day to day life operations.

All these ‘Political, scandal, traffic, leaders’ are bigger matters to me. They are beyond me and myself and I do not have control on it. I am not ‘Sivaji – the Boss’ or ‘Spider man’ to change everything.

I came across on ALMA MATER value and I aligned myself to the value. The value is , “ I WILL ALWAYS OPERATE IN CIRCLE OF MY INFLUENCE AND NOT IN MY CIRCLE OF CONCERN”. It slapped me.

All those things are bigger to me and I do not have control on them. But I can focus on circle of my influence.

‘Corruption… I cannot stop. But let me focus on my circle. I will not bribe. Dishonest… Let me focus on my level… I will not lie.

Cutting trees… I will plant trees..” I learnt… I will operate in circle of my influence… Slowly…By doing this properly, my circle of influence will expand and it will become bigger and bigger. One day It will match my circle of concern.

I am with a mission of making difference in fellow human being. I am a bridge between my organization and fellow human being. Our vision is to put India on top of the world. But it is beyond me and myself. I will focus on my circle. Let me bring people in my circle, make a difference in their life, make them strong and value based. Slowly my circle will expand. It will become bigger and bigger.

One day.. Prime minister, President and all the top leaders of the country will be Almanites. They will be powerful, value based. India will be stronger, ethical and it will be on top of the world!
